The word "sculpt" is on half the schedules in town and means something different at each one. Here's what it means in a sculpt method class, and whether it's for you.

What is a sculpt class? Inside a sculpt method class at sculptme
A sculpt class is a strength workout. It builds muscle by working against resistance with control, usually with more holds and more reps than a typical stretch-and-tone class. On a reformer, that resistance comes from springs, so you can work hard without any jumping or pounding.
The tricky part is that "sculpt" doesn't mean one fixed thing. Look at a few schedules around town and you'll see sculpt classes on a mat, with hand weights, with cardio bursts, on a reformer, and everything in between. So here's what it usually means, and what it means in a sculpt method class at sculptme.
At sculptme, the sculpt method is built around simple, slow movements that work to strengthen and tone muscles.
Quick takeaways
A sculpt class is a style. It always means strength work, but the equipment and pace change from studio to studio.
A sculpt method class uses spring resistance on a sliding carriage, so it's low-impact strength training.
In a sculpt method class we hold positions longer so you feel the muscle doing the work. That's time under tension.
You don't need experience. Every 50-minute class is fully coached and modifiable for every level.
The easiest way to try it: 21 days unlimited for $99.
What does "sculpt" mean in a fitness class?
In fitness, "sculpt" means you're working your muscles against resistance to build strength and shape. Think controlled, deliberate movement rather than flat-out cardio.
What changes is how each studio gets that resistance. Some sculpt classes use light hand weights on a mat. Some mix in cardio intervals to keep your heart rate up. Some are heated. And a sculpt method class at sculptme puts you on a reformer and lets the springs do the loading.
None of those is wrong. They're just different workouts that happen to share a name, which is why it's worth reading the class description before you book anywhere.
What is a sculpt method class?
A sculpt method class is sculptme's strength class on the reformer: a sliding carriage connected to springs, with a footbar and straps. You push and pull against the springs with your legs, arms and core, and the carriage moves under you, so your deeper stabilizing muscles have to stay switched on the whole time.
Because the resistance comes from springs instead of gravity, you're loaded in both directions of a move, not just on the way up. That's a big part of why reformer work feels harder than it looks. If you want the longer version of how the machine works, we break it down in what is reformer Pilates.
What happens in a sculpt method class?
Every sculpt method class is 50 minutes, total-body and fully coached on our carbon-fiber Sculptformer reformers. Here's what makes it feel like ours.
Every move has a reason. Our exercises are straightforward on purpose. We work with intent, so you know which muscles you're working and why.
We hold it longer. Instead of rushing through reps, we hold positions so you actually feel the muscle doing the work. That's time under tension, and it's where the strength comes from. It's also where your legs start shaking and you find out you're stronger than you thought.
It doesn't reinvent itself every week. It's a total-body workout that stays consistent from class to class, so you can actually see yourself getting stronger instead of starting over every time.
You're coached, not counted at. Classes are kept small so your instructor can watch your form, adjust your springs and give you options as you go.

Is a sculpt class good for beginners?
At a lot of studios, sculpt is the faster, harder class and they'll ask you to take a few regular classes first. Always check before you book.
At sculptme you can take your first sculpt method class on day one. Classes are modifiable for every level, from first-timer to experienced, and your instructor sets your springs and talks you through every rep. The springs support you as much as they challenge you, which makes the reformer a surprisingly friendly place to start.
If that little voice is telling you to get in shape first, read too out of shape for reformer Pilates? and then book anyway.
Is a sculpt class just stretching with a nicer name?
No. Stretching is part of any good class, but a sculpt method class is strength training. You're loading your muscles against resistance and making them work through the full range of each move.
That's the whole idea behind sculptme. We're a strength space. If you've been taking classes and not feeling any different, it usually comes down to progression, which we unpack in why Pilates sometimes doesn't give you results. And if you want the science-free version of the strength side, read why reformer Pilates builds real strength.
Will a sculpt method class change how I look?
Here's our honest answer: we won't promise you a new body in 21 days, and nobody else honestly can either. What women tell us they notice first is how they feel. Stronger getting up off the floor, standing a bit taller at their desk, and actually looking forward to the hour that's just theirs.
That's what we mean by movement that changes. Mind and body, both.
If you have an injury, are pregnant, or have a medical concern, talk to your doctor first and tell your instructor before class so we can help you modify.
How often should I take a sculpt method class?
Two or three classes a week is a realistic place to start. Showing up week after week matters more than one huge week followed by a month off. We cover this in more detail in how often you should do reformer Pilates.
What should I bring to my first sculpt method class?
Wear fitted activewear, like leggings and a snug top, and bring water. Grip socks are required on the Sculptformer, and if you're on the intro offer, your first pair is on us. Here's more on what to expect at your first class.
